What is menopause?

Menopause is the time that marks the end of your menstrual cycles, and you can no longer become pregnant. You reach menopause after a full year has passed without a menstrual period.

The stages of menopause

Menopause happens in three stages:

  • Perimenopause or the menopause transition: The transition to menopause usually begins in your 40s and typically lasts about two to eight years. Your ovaries gradually produce lower levels of hormones, and you may start to experience symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and irregular periods. You’re still having menstrual cycles and can get pregnant.
  • Menopause: When you haven’t had a period for 12 consecutive months, we diagnose menopause. Your ovaries stop releasing eggs, and you can no longer get pregnant. Menopause symptoms may be mild and occur rarely, or they may be more noticeable and happen often. Learn more about the menopause symptoms we treat.
  • Postmenopause: This stage starts at the time of menopause and continues for the rest of your life. Some women continue to have menopause symptoms for a few years before they improve. In postmenopause, low levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone increase your risk of certain health conditions, such as heart disease and osteoporosis.

Healthy aging through healthy habits

In addition to menopause-focused care, we also offer services and care to support healthy aging for a lifetime. We work closely with you to understand your overall health, lifestyle and preferences to provide education on healthy habits. You’ll learn how small lifestyle changes can make a big difference in your health and wellness. Our team provides the latest information and guidance on:

  • Alcohol and tobacco use
  • Exercise
  • Food choices and nutritional supplements
  • Healthy weight loss and maintenance
  • Pelvic floor strengthening
  • Personal safety
  • Sleep hygiene
